Event outline

I was there at the dawn of Babylon 5....

Perhaps not but that's how it felt at the time, it was in a caravan in Derbyshire back in 1993 when I read in a magazine that a guy called Joe Straczynski was producing a new type of television show that ticked all of the boxes for me.

It was set in the future It was set in space There would be lots of spaceships

What was most exciting however was the idea of the 5 year story arc. Sci-Fi shows had traditionally seemed open ended, without any real conclusion or any hint of an actual destination being close.

The Enterprise never reached the end of its five year mission; Seaview never seemed to reach the Bottom of the Sea and those poor Robinson's never got to Alpha Centauri.

Even the main contemporary sci fi show of the day  - Star Trek The Next Generation was more of a soap opera and while the characters often went through life changing events you would often see them the very next episode, acting as though nothing had happened.

The idea of a 5 year story that built slowly from just a few arc stories in season 1 through to season 5 when every episode would be part of the epic plot line where characters would advance through the story was completely radical. Babylon 5, despite all of the obstacles that seemed to be put in its way during its run, had a profound effect on the industry and changed genre TV forever.

So we had wanted to run a LARP based upon Babylon 5 for some time but given that the system that we use for combat resolution is based on the old Worlds of Wonder "Laser Tag" system it was going to present us with something of a challenge.

How were we going to squeeze a circuit board, speaker, battery and a lens arrangement into one of the smallest weapons in science fiction. Well we managed it, or rather should I say one man did and was quickly followed by someone else and what followed was the largest mass production of scratch built Laser Tag equipment for a single genre event for many years if not ever. More on the system mechanics in the rules.

If you are new to Sci Fi LARP then you probably have lots of questions so before you part with any money we would ask that you read through the following information to ensure that you have a clear idea of what this event will be like.

We have also included a Social Charter and we ask all participants to sign the booking form in order to acknowledge that they have read, understood and will abide by it.

B5 LARP

Fall of Light takes its inspiration from the Babylon 5 TV series and while it’s being written by fans for fans it is not a Warner sanctioned event.

The event is purely not for profit and in the unlikely happenstance that there is any money left over it will be put towards additional props or future games.

Fall of Light is planned as a trilogy but each individual part is written in such a way that they can be played as a stand-alone game.

As a player you will have the option to play one of the main races (Human, Minbari, Centari or Narn),
as well as one of the races that make up the League of the Non-Aligned (Brakiri, Drazi, Gaim, Lumati, Markab,Pak'ma'ra.....).

Game 1 ended (as far as the characters were concerned) on April 15th, 2260 and as our heroes (aboard the EAS Talos) arrived in the Epsilon Eridani system they were just in time to see an Earth Alliance fleet attacking the Babylon 5 station (‘Severed Dreams’ season 3, episode 10).

Following the intervention of the Minbari, a second wave of Earth Force vessels were forced to retreat and the Talos (which was in no shape to join the battle on either side), was ordered to stand-down.

Game 2 begins later that evening (B5 local time), as the Civilians and Crew are transferred from the Talos over to the station. This will allow for plenty of opportunities for new players to join the action playing civilians or staff already aboard Babylon 5. Due to the damage suffered to the station during the epic battle for independence, the crew of the Talos and the Passengers (mainly refugees from Sector 157), have been assigned to an area of Red 2. The over stretched B5 security teams will take time to clear everyone so you have all been ordered not to stray from this area. Word however spreads quickly on Babylon 5 and there are already rumours that the Talos has been missing for some time and that its appearance has taken the stations staff by surprise.

Fall of Light 2 will be set aboard Babylon 5 but while primarily an indoor game it will not be exclusively so and some of the action will take place away from the station.
